It can run in either of two modes:
As a classic firewall/VPN gateway using Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA) software (with management via Adaptive Security Device Manager — ASDM).
Or as a next‑generation firewall + unified threat management device using Cisco Firepower Threat Defense (FTD) (or later Secure Firewall FTD) — enabling advanced threat protection, intrusion prevention, application awareness, VPN, and more.
Because of its small size (desktop or wall‑mountable, or rack‑mount with optional shelf), it fits well in offices or branch settings where space is limited.
Dual-mode support: classic ASA mode or modern NGFW/UTM mode with FTD — lets you choose based on your needs.
Routing & VPN — supports site‑to‑site and remote‑access VPNs (IPSec), BGP/OSPF routing (in ASA mode).
Stateful firewall (Layer 3/4) plus — when using FTD — Application Visibility & Control (AVC), Intrusion Prevention (IPS), malware protection, URL filtering, content control, and advanced threat defense.
PoE+ support on certain ports — can power compatible devices directly (helpful for IP phones, cameras, APs, etc.).
Compact, fanless, and quiet design — suitable for desktop or small‑rack environments.
Flexible management — local management via built‑in GUI (ASDM with ASA, or FDM with FTD), or centralized management via cloud or dedicated management solutions (e.g. management center, orchestration tools) if multiple devices.
